Dr. Alan Collins’ research focuses on food retailing, supply chains, and consumer behaviour, drawing from a background in sociology, economics, and marketing. His passion for food retailing was shaped through years of experience in Cork’s English Market, Tesco UK, and extensive collaborations with Musgrave and SuperValu retailers as both an educator and store of the year adjudicator.
Much of Dr. Collins’ published work explores marketing channels, particularly the impact of evolving retail strategies on indigenous suppliers and channel relationships. His research has been featured in leading journals, including Supply Chain Management: An International Journal, Journal of Marketing Management, and European Journal of Marketing.
More recently, his focus has shifted to consumer and shopper behaviour, examining search-related activities such as price and promotional search, published in Journal of Marketing Management, and the emerging Store Brandscape heuristic, soon to appear in European Journal of Marketing.
While his earlier work followed a positivist approach, recent collaborations incorporate interpretivist perspectives, particularly in food consumption and health behaviours, influenced by consumer culture and engagement theory.
Since 2001, Dr. Collins has continuously directed industry and academic programs, including retailing (2001–2010), MSc/MBS Food Marketing (2002–2016), and BSc Food Marketing and Entrepreneurship (2016–present).
