PhD Student
Aven (BSc) has a background in Soil Ecology at UCD, and has just submitted an MSc research thesis on the effects of waterlogging on the rhizobacterial community of barley, under the supervision of Dr. Tancredi Caruso at University College Dublin. His PhD, under the provisional title: “Response of Barley to Climate Change Extremes: A belowground approach”, will continue this work with barley at UCD under co-supervision between Dr. Caruso, and Dr. Saoirse Tracy, with a focus on plant-soil interactions. His research goals are the investigation interactions between barley, abiotic and environmental factors, and soil microbes. He currently has a primary focus on the ecological networking of the soil microbes, but is working towards incorporating all of these interactions more fully into his research. The goal is to build up understanding of domestic barley as a complex, cohesive ecological system in pursuit of practical tools to improve the future of crop security for barley.
