Professor Breige McNulty is an Associate Professor in Human Nutrition at the School of Agriculture and Food Science and Principal Investigator at the UCD Institute of Food and Health. Her research focuses on food consumption data to understand the impact of foods, nutrients, food ingredients, and chemicals on health, with an emphasis on food safety and policy. Previously, her academic work concentrated on metabolic health, particularly folate and related B-vitamins during pregnancy. Currently, she explores factors influencing iodine and iron intake and status in the Irish population, as well as studying the relationship between genetics, obesity, wholegrain intake, metabolic health, and cardiovascular disease. Additionally, she investigates exposure to additives and pesticide residues.

Professor McNulty collaborates on various national and international research projects, including the European FP7-funded Total Diet Study Exposure. She has worked with industry partners such as Danone, Cereal Partners Worldwide, Unilever, and the National Dairy Council, producing industry reports. She is an invited expert on the ILSI Addition of Nutrients Expert Group and the EFSA Network on Food Consumption Data Committees, representing Ireland. She is also a member of the Joint Irish Nutri-genomics Organisation (JINGO) and the European Nutritional Phenotype Database Sharing Initiative.
