Professor Fiona Smith is a Professorial Research Fellow at the UK Trade Policy Observatory (UKTPO), University of Sussex, joining in 2024 after holding academic positions at leading UK law schools, including Leeds, Warwick, UCL, Leicester, and Sheffield. She has also been a Visiting Professor at prestigious US institutions such as the University of Minnesota, University of Michigan, and Boston College Law School. An internationally recognised expert in international trade law, with a particular focus on agricultural trade, Professor Smith has published extensively and delivered research presentations to global audiences across the public and private sectors.
She is a member of the UK Department of Business and Trade’s Expert Steering Group on trade strategy for the G7, G20, and WTO. Previously, she served as Special Adviser to the UK House of Lords EU Energy and Environment Sub-Committee and the House of Commons International Trade Committee, contributing to key reports and the scrutiny of post-Brexit trade agreements. Currently, Professor Smith is Co-Investigator on two major projects: the Horizon Europe project “FoSTA-Health,” facilitating fresh produce exports from Tanzania and South Africa to the EU, and the Co-Centre for Sustainable and Resilient Food Systems on the island of Ireland, collaborating with experts from City University, Chatham House, and UCD.
