Role
Post Doctoral Researcher
Dr James Gillespie is a Computational Research Fellow at the Co-Centre for Sustainable Food Systems within the Institute for Global Food Security at Queen’s University Belfast. He holds a BEng in Electronic and Software Engineering and a Ph.D. in Machine Learning, both from Ulster University. His research bridges cutting-edge computing with real-world sustainability challenges, particularly in agri-food systems. James has extensive experience in IoT, machine learning, and big data analytics, having led AI initiatives on projects such as REAMIT (€5.7M, Interreg), developing tools to enhance food quality monitoring, supply chain efficiency, and data infrastructure. He has also applied computer vision to sustainability challenges in the recycling sector, designing models for brand traceability in glass waste. At the Co-Centre, James works with Prof. Chris Creevey on the Data Modelling Platform, which aims to integrate data across the food system to support improvements in production, processing, and consumption. His work focuses on building interoperable databases, advancing the FAIRification of data, and generating actionable insights from large-scale datasets to accelerate the transition to healthy, data-driven, and sustainable food systems.
