Name
Lorraine Brennan
Role
Co-Principal Investigator
Professor Lorraine Brennan is a full professor at the UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science and a Principal Investigator at both the UCD Institute of Food & Health and the Conway Institute. She leads a cutting-edge nutritional metabolomics research group, specialising in the application of metabolomics to nutrition research and the development of personalised nutrition strategies. A recipient of an ERC Consolidator Grant, Professor Brennan has significantly advanced the field of metabolomic-based biomarker discovery. She is actively involved in two European consortia, IMPROVE and PROMED-COG, which focus on metabolomics and its applications. Her work has established links between metabolomic profiles and food intake, enabling the development of biomarkers for dietary assessment. A notable achievement is her team’s recent publication demonstrating the use of urinary biomarkers and calibration curves from a feeding study to estimate food intake in population-based studies. Professor Brennan served as Director of the European Nutrigenomics Organization for five years, spearheading initiatives such as the Early Career Network and broadening the organisation’s membership. She was recently appointed to the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine Standing Committee on Evidence Synthesis and Communications in Diet and Chronic Disease Relationships.
In addition to her research, she is actively involved in undergraduate teaching and serves as Head of Human Nutrition at UCD.
