Name

Nicolae Corcionivoschi

Role

Funded Investigator

Professor Nicolae Corcionivoschi is originally from Banat, a region in the south-west of Transylvania, Romania. He holds a BSc in Animal Biotechnology and an MSc in Animal Nutrition from King Michael I University, Timișoara, Romania. In 2005, he earned a PhD in Microbiology from the University of Edinburgh, focusing on bacterial electron transport proteins.

His research interests include bacterial virulence, the development of novel pre- and probiotics, and advanced technologies for the detection of foodborne pathogens. His laboratory conducts cutting-edge research to quantify Campylobacter in poultry based on species virulence and identify novel genes involved in its pathogenesis. Additionally, his team investigates the chicken gut microbiota, exploring its composition and strategies to manipulate it to reduce harmful bacteria.

Professor Corcionivoschi supervises two PhD students funded by industry, studying the effects of biosecurity and management regulations on the virulence of Campylobacter in Northern Ireland.

As a lab-based project leader, his current work focuses on identifying host receptors for a novel Campylobacter toxin, with the aim of developing inhibitors to reduce poultry colonization. His team is also advancing towards animal testing for a novel Campylobacter vaccine and conducting microbiome analysis in collaboration with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
