Dr Rebecca Wells is a Senior Lecturer in Food Policy at the Centre for Food Policy and Programme Director for the Centre’s MSc in Food Policy. Her research examines the intersections of food policy and the media, as well as strategies to develop healthier, more sustainable, and equitable food systems. She is particularly interested in food systems pedagogy and was awarded a Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy in 2018.

Rebecca’s background as a BBC producer and food journalist informs her academic work. Joining the BBC in 1991, she worked on various programmes, including BBC Radio 4’s The Food Programme, producing documentaries on topics such as food policy, culture, history, and sustainability. Her work earned several accolades, including the Guild of Food Writers Michael Smith Award and the Glenfiddich Award. After completing her PhD, which analysed UK food policy and media interactions, Rebecca contributed to the IFSTAL food systems teaching initiative and later worked on the EU-funded QUEST project, exploring science journalism. Her research spans food policy, media, food systems, and food security, with a strong focus on teaching and learning. She co-leads the Centre’s contributions to the UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training in Food Systems.
